  • New journal: The Lancet Planetary Health

    The new journal, The Lancet Planetary Health, will join The Lancet Public Health and The Lancet Global Health to provide a third pillar in an open-access programme covering the interplay between health and the determinants of health in our living and physical world.

    What is planetary health? And what kind of science will this new journal be seeking?
    In The Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, planetary health was defined as the health of human civilisations and the natural systems on which they depend. To explain this idea in simpler terms we need to think of human beings as a powerful and growing force behind the environmental change that we are witnessing today. Alterations to climate, water, land and ecosystems are challenging all life on our planet, with serious implications for human health. The way we think about the planet needs to be revised, as does the approach we take in interacting with it.

    Planetary health is therefore a new interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach. It aims not only to investigate the effects of environmental change on human health, but also to study the political, economic, and social systems that govern those effects.

  • Second Annual One Health Day – 3rd Nov

    The first edition of the global One Health Day, held on 3 November 2016, generated over 150 events in over 35 countries engaging approximately 17,000 participants.

    The three leading global partners have now launched promotion of the 2017 annual One Health Day campaign, calling upon individuals and groups from around the world to implement One Health educational projects and awareness events under the auspices of One Health Day.

    Regional One Health Day Spokespersons in Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas will continue to liaise with project teams in their respective regions, while a network of One Health Day Country Ambassadors works within their countries to encourage creation of inspiring events.

    Anyone, from academia to government to corporate to private individuals can plan and implement a One Health Day Event. The events do not have to fall right on November 3.

    All events should be registered on the webpage to be promoted on the One Health Day website and represented on the global One Health Day Events map.

    Student groups from all disciplines can compete for cash prizes and global recognition. Participating teams can have the One Health Day logo translated into a language of their choice. All promotional materials are freely downloadable from the One Health Day website.

    At the beginning of the 21st century, the world is facing challenges that are interconnected, including wars, terrorism, (forced) migrations, global inequalities and asymmetries, climate change etc.

    The fundamental constraints to an equitable standard of living for everyone are neither a shortage of resources nor a lack of technological innovations. The main impediments are a lack of political will to reform a global institutional order that produces foreseeable yet avoidable power asymmetries. Whereas on our side, it is potentially experiences of disempowerment and/or the lack of solidarity, which influence our abilities to imagine a just world and to dare enough to play the role of change-makers.

    This is an interdisciplinary, inquiry-driven gathering with the main focus on bringing people together to share ideas in a convivial environment. We hope to explore what kind of alternative questions, concepts, methods and practices are necessary to address these complex challenges of our time.

    It is in this spirit that we invite contributions from practitioners and researchers to share your insights, practices and experiences relating to programmes, policies and studies that address issues of social (in)justice and (in)equality locally and internationally. Possible topics could address one of the following thematic areas:

    • Violence, Conflict & Resistance
    • Global Justice, Well-being & Sustainability

  • NEOH Workshop – Transdisciplinary research evaluation

    Transdisciplinary research evaluation – From methodological challenges to indicator definitions

    Zurich, Switzerland 22nd June (full day), 23rd June (until mid afternoon)

    One Health (OH) initiatives are, by their nature, transcending disciplines, sectors, institutions and cultures. Facilitating knowledge integration is thus one of their core challenges. This core challenge is what OH has in common with transdisciplinary research in climate change and adaptation, energy transitions, and international development. NEOH’s approach to advance consensus on evaluation standards by networking among key professionals and emphasis on case studies has likewise been adopted among several semi-public German think tanks in these quickly evolving fields, and several large projects are currently being funded. Therefore, there is arguably much to learn from each other.

    We therefore invite you to a joint 2-day workshop with key representatives from these fields and institutions to exchange approaches and experiences. This workshop aims at bringing these initiatives together. Its objectives are mutual networking, an exchange of experiences, and in-depth discussion of the different methodological approaches, their underlying assumptions and the derived indicator systems.
