AVMA defines antimicrobial stewardship in animal health as the actions veterinarians take individually and as a profession to preserve the effectiveness and availability of antimicrobial drugs through conscientious oversight and responsible medical decision-making while safeguarding animal, public, and environmental health. OHEART PhD Fellowship
The Ohio State University’s Global One Health initiative (GOHi) is now offering a new PhD fellowship as part of its
One Health East Africa Research and Training (OHEART) Program. Funded by the NIH Fogarty International Center, this PhD Fellowship program aims to train future researchers and trainers using an integrated multidisciplinary “One Health” approach. WHO Reviews List of Blueprint Priority Diseases – Zoonotic One Health Challenges
Following its second annual review, WHO experts have prioritized 8 diseases, all zoonotic One Health challenges. There is an urgent need for accelerated research and development on these diseases because of their potential to cause a public health emergency and the absence of efficacious drugs and/or vaccines . The 8th priority, Disease X, represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease and so the R&D Blueprint explicitly seeks to enable cross-cutting R&D preparedness as far as possible that is also relevant for an unknown “Disease X” . https://goo.gl/CkCyyN

Zoonotic Disease Risks for (U.S.) Animal Health workers
The U.S. National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV) publishes Compendia, white papers, and other documents providing standardized national recommendations for prevention of zoonotic diseases that animal health workers might routinely be exposed to. These materials, especially the Compendium of Veterinary Standard Precautions (VSP) for Zoonotic Disease Prevention in Veterinary Personnel, are useful not only to those who work with animals but also to physicians, physicians assistants, nurses and other human health / public health workers to increase familiarity with diseases that they should be watching for in their animal health worker patients. Animal workers are urged to read and closely follow the VSP for personal health protection. Human health care providers are encouraged to print out the Appendices (pp 21-23) and post them for quick reference as reminders to ask occupational risks questions of patients who work with animals or in outdoor settings. April 14, 2018 5th Annual One Health Fair at the St Louis Zoo
St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The Saint Louis Zoo is the only zoo that hosts such a One Health Fair. Two veterinary colleges (Univ of Ill and Univ of Missouri), two medical colleges (Wash U and St Louis U) and two undergraduate ecology schools (Wash U and Fontbonne) participate. The event brings together teams of 3 which include an MD, DVM and ecology/environment student. These teams work together on some One Health topic, learn to speak the same language and just get to know students in another arm of OH. After a few weeks of working together they have ½ a day on to present their topic to Zoo visitors (up to 20,000). https://goo.gl/miEWt2
