  • One Health/Ecohealth survey Part 2 and extension of deadline for conference registration

    1. Many of you have completed a questionnaire from the NEOH Phase 2 working group asking you about activities that would be useful to people working in One Health, Ecohealth and related fields. The purpose of the questionnaire was to identify useful activities that a new European One Health/Ecohealth organization could focus its efforts on.  It is our goal that the new organization should be valued by its members and useful to people working in One Health/Ecohealth. We received many very good suggestions for activities and we sincerely thank you for taking the time to share your suggestions with us. However, there were more activities suggested than are possible for a new organization to engage in. For this reason, we are asking you to help us one more time by ranking the suggested activities by their importance. We have grouped similar activities together and created a questionnaire to make ranking the activities within each group easy for you. We cordially invite you to complete the questionnaire. It is quite short and should not take more than 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Please click on this link to open the questionnaire: http://www.vphibern.ch/limesurvey/index.php/248852?lang=en The questionnaire will close on August 24, 2018. If you have any questions about this questionnaire please send an email to: john.berezowski@vetsuisse.unibe.ch
    2. About BMC and open access publishing

All articles published in BMC’s independent journals are open access. This means:

    • Articles are universally and freely accessible upon publication (after peer review and acceptance by the Editors)
    • Articles are immediately deposited and permanently archived in PubMed Central and other major indices
    • Authors retain copyright of their research articles
    • Articles are compliant with an increasing number of funding agency policies promoting open access like the U.S. National Institutes of Health, The Wellcome Trust, and RCUK

A standard article-processing charge (APC) is levied on all articles that are accepted for publication. The APC is a flat charge (currently €1,745) and no additional costs are incurred. The APC covers the costs of peer reviewing, editing, publishing, maintaining and archiving research articles.

BMC aims to ensure that a lack of funds is not an obstacle to publishing:

    • BMC operates an institutional membership arrangement where authors from participating institutions can have the APCs covered; we also offer guidance on securing APC funding
    • In cases where neither the authors nor their institution or funder are able to pay the APC, a discount or waiver may be granted on a case by case basis.
    • Authors from up 80 lower income countries qualify for automatic discounts or waivers

For further information on funding and resources, please visit our guidance page here.

  • Opinion piece by NEOH member Brigit Schauer

Crowd sourcing to bridge the gap between science and public health

A One Health approach has been promoted for twenty years to strengthen control and prevention of zoonotic diseases. But barriers remain particularly limiting effective intersectoral cooperation between science and public health. Crowdsourcing is an online, distributed, problem-solving, and production model, which generally includes four elements: 1) An institution or an individual has a task or question, 2) a community (crowd) solves the task on a voluntary basis, 3) an online-platform facilitates the interaction of both sides, and 4) the result is an added value for the questioner as well as the crowd. We propose a crowdsourcing approach where individual scientists and public and veterinary health representatives can act both as questioners or crowd members. The combination of an online exchange forum, an integrated search database and targeted training making use of innovative media has the potential to break down historical barriers limiting intersectoral cooperation. This approach can encourage information exchange, improve translation of research into policy and practice and lead to more targeted science and advanced training.
